OUTPATIENT PROCEDURES

 
 
1.

Working hours

   
 
  • Outpatient hours are between 8.00 am to 7.00 pm from Monday to Saturday.
  • Emergency cases will be seen at all hours on all days. 
 
 
 
2.

Outpatient procedures

   
 
  • Mahathma Eye Hospital follows a principle of comprehensive eye examination rather than just addressing the presenting symptoms.
  • The basic tests that the patients are likely to encounter during a routine eye examination includes visual acuity testing, refraction (Estimation of power of spectacles of individual), Slit lamp examination, tonometry, dilated retinal examination and other necessary tests, which are prescribed according to the condition of the patient's eye.
  • It may take 1 to 2 hours for a complete eye examination.
  • If, after the check up, doctors suggest examination by other specialists, the process may take 3 to 4 hours for additional tests. 
 
 
 
3.

Registration

 
 
  • The patient is charged Rs.50/- for registration.
  • The registration fee is a one time fee.
  • It is valid for 3months only
  • The patient is provided with an “Identification Card” which provides the MRNO, NAME OF THE PATIENT, ADDRESS, VALID DATE FOR THE ID..
  • The patient must bring their ID CARD with record file each time they visit the hospital.
  • The Medical Record is given to the patient for their reference and the same is maintained in the Electronic Record of the hospital.
 
 
4.

Tonometry

   
 
  • The technique of measurement of pressure within the eye (Intra ocular pressure – IOP/IOT).
  • This is very important since IOP is one of the indicators of Glaucoma.
  • To nometry is recommended in everyone over the age of 40, family history of glaucoma, Myopia, Diabetes and any history of previous ocular injuries.
 

This technique is performed with,

 
  • Applanation Tonometer
  • Non contact Tonometer (NCT)
  • Schiotz Tonometer
 
5.

Preliminary Eye examinations

   
 
    After registration and billing, our OPD and patient coordinators will guide you to
     the Optometrist for the routine preliminary evaluations . 
 
 
6.

Ocular & Systemic history

   
 
  • The medical diagnosis is based on history, clinical examination, and investigations.
    • So you are requested to give the appropriate information about your eye problems, which will help your clinician to determine which specific tests or procedures should be performed during the examination.
  • Accurate interpretation and analysis, will lead to a definitive diagnosis and  Management plan.
    • It includes the chief complaints/reason for the visit, about your visual problem, its duration, regarding your spectacles, contact lenses etc.
  • Your medical history on high blood pressure and diabetes is very important since it can affect your eyes.
  • Family history of any major eye conditions like glaucoma, cataract, retinal  problems, usage of thick spectacles etc will help your examiner modify his 
    examinations.
  • Information regarding current medication and hypersensitivity or allergy to any specific medicines like penicillin, sulpha drugs or any dilating drops will
    help your clinician to take precautionary measures.
     
 
7.

  Visual acuity test

   
 
    • Your examiner will quantify your eye's ability to "see" i.e. to resolve varying letter sizes by automated chart projectors and it is an essential component to determine your refractive status (visual status of the eye).
  • Ultimately this test will be used in the design of spectacles, contact lenses, to  formulate a diagnosis and to monitor the effect of treatment in various eye disorders. .
  • This test will be performed on all patients at each visit.  
     
 
8.

 Slit-lamp Examination

   
 
  • The Slit lamp is an instrument which is used to examine the health of your eyes.
  • The Slit lamp, also called a biomicroscope gives a highly magnified image of the
  • structures of the eye in order to thoroughly evaluate them for signs ofinfection or disease.
  • The patient's chin is kept on the chin rest of the Slit lamp and the doctor looks through a set of oculars and examines the front of the eye (lids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, etc).
  • Then, with the help of a special high-powered lens, the doctor will view the inside  of the eye (retina, macula, optic nerve etc).
  • A whole range of eye conditions and diseases can be detected with Slit-lamp examination, including cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, diabetic eye disease etc.

 Refraction

10.

Dilatation

   
 
  • Dilating drops are drops that are put into the patient's eye to make the pupils bigger in order to get a better view of the internal structures of the eye..
  • The pupil is like a window to the inside of the eye which is opened wider by the dilating drops.
  • Dilating drops usually take about 15 to 20 minutes to start working.
  • While the dilating drops are instilled, you will be sensitive to light (because more light is getting into your eye) and may notice difficulty in focusing on objects up close.
  • Once the drops have taken effect, the doctor will use a variety of instruments and light sources to look inside the eyes.
  • Dilatation is very important for people with risk factors for eye disease, because it  allows for the most thorough evaluation of the health of the inside of your eyes.
  • After your eyes are dilated, your vision will be blurred for 3-4 hours and you may not be able to see normally.
  • You may require someone to take you back home and advised not to drive.
     
 
11.

 Referred to Speciality Clinics

   
 
    • The patients are first examined in the General OPD.
    • If the doctor finds that the patient needs a specialty consultation, the patient is sent to the respective speciality clinic (retina, glaucoma, cornea, contact lens, refractive services or oculoplasty) depending on the nature of the problem.
     
 
12.

Patient counselling

   
 
    • If the patient has cataract he or she is sent to the counselling department and advised for surgery..
    • The patient can clarify doubts regarding the surgery, facilities, charges and insurance claims.
  • Patients can book an appointment for surgery in the counselling department.
     
 
13.

For Review Patients

   
  • Patients must bring their ID card with report file which was provided to them during their first visit to the hospital.
  • Patients must report to the Front desk for review.
  • The other outpatient procedures for review patients are similar to those for new outpatients. The consultation charges may differ depending on the duration and frequency of their review visit.
